How To Prepare For Your First Google Coaching Session

Your first Google Coaching session is important for making a first impression. Whether you are using a private Google Coach or a Google-employed expert, it’s important to be prepared for that meeting. Here are some tips to be ready for your first Google coaching session.

Understand What You Want out of Your Google Coaching Time

The first thing is to consider your goal with this coaching session. Is there a specific issue you’re having trouble with, a new campaign strategy you want to discuss, or want to gain more understanding of Google Ads? Sharing this information with your Google support resource will help them tailor their experience to your goals. This is really important with the Google specialists; they are judged by maintaining or increasing your account spend, so if you aren’t clear with your goals with them they will default to what Google wants from them.

Private coaches likely specialize in certain aspects of Google coaching. Some focus on account set-up and strategy. Some Google coaches focus on specific industries and are geared to what is successful within that industry. Other Google coaches are more about general knowledge. You probably have a reason for picking the coach you did, and thus, your goals will seem fairly obvious to the coach. Additionally, they’ll likely have some onboarding materials to fill out before your call.

Whether your Google coach is from Google or a personal coach, understand your initial goal and make sure that is the focus. You can spend a lot of time and money with Google coaches and not get the desired results.

Prepare Questions You Wish to Get Answered in The Meeting

Having a prepared list of questions that you wish to have answered is a great way to ensure you get value out of your time with a Google coach. Some common questions that we’ve seen are:

  • Am I using the best bidding strategy?
  • What are some optimizations I can make to this campaign to increase conversions?
  • How can I increase my quality score for this keyword?
  • How can I increase my ad quality for this keyword?
  • Show me how to set up my account properly so that my Campaigns and Ad Groups make sense
  • How can I learn how to compare my campaign to my competitors?

Any one of those questions could take up a full meeting and your Google expert will be well-suited to answer this. A private 1:1 Google Coach will likely have a curriculum and some initial ideas, but any of those questions show an eagerness to learn. Additionally, the answers will give you real results that should immediately benefit your business.

Be Familiar with your Data

Before the meeting, familiarize yourself with your Account, Google Analytics, and any other data sources you have. You want to be prepared and familiar with your Google Ads account. In the event that you aren’t the person who manages it or you’re taking over for somebody who used to manage it, it will be very helpful to understand your high-value keywords, your battle-ground keywords, and which ad groups are giving you cause for concern.

Understand the account history, what has been tried, what has worked, and some general discussion about the state of Google Ads in your marketing mix. This will allow you to talk with your coach about your account and set the agenda for future meetings.

Know Your Other Marketing Channels

Google Ads is a bottom-of-the-funnel tactic, so knowing how you drive traffic to your platforms through other channels might be helpful. Your Google Coach should want your campaign consistent with your brand and as integrated as possible with your other tactics. For example, understand your taglines and key messaging if you run traditional media. These elements can become parts of your search ads if they aren’t already. Additionally, understanding your website and its pages will help propose different landing pages. Your Google Coach will likely want to understand all of your marketing elements, so being ready to talk about them is helpful.

Be Coachable

Of course, this should be obvious. However, if you are going to participate in Google coaching, you need to be willing to accept different ideas and feedback. Some of this feedback might be opposite to what you have been doing. However, Google coaching aims to make you a better search marketer. Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Lebron James, and many other all-time greats had coaches and needed to adapt as their sports evolved. It’s important to remember this and enter with the right attitude for your Google coaching session.
